Head bumps and concussion

A mild bump with no warning signs can often be checked at urgent care. Anyone who blacked out, keeps vomiting, or seems confused needs an emergency room.

Go to the ER or call 911 if

  • Passed out, even briefly
  • Vomiting more than once, a headache that keeps getting worse, or a seizure
  • Confusion, unusual sleepiness, slurred speech or weakness
  • One pupil larger than the other, or clear fluid from the nose or ears
  • Any head injury in someone on blood thinners, or in an older adult who fell

What urgent care can usually do

  • Check for concussion signs
  • Guidance on rest, screens and return to school or sports
  • Referral for follow-up

What to bring

  • How the injury happened
  • Whether they lost consciousness
  • Any symptoms since
